Landsat big data analysis presented at PTAC Ecological Issues Forum

Hatfield is pleased to be presenting at the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada (PTAC) 2019 Ecological Issues Forum on December 5th in Calgary, AB. Olivier Tsui, Hatfield’s Geomatics Manager, will present Evaluating 30 Years of Landsat Data to Develop Vegetation Disturbance and Recovery Information for Caribou Ranges in Northeast British Columbia.

The Society for Ecosystem Restoration in Northern BC (SERNbc), BC Government, and Hatfield completed a systematic analysis of landscape disturbance and vegetation recovery for four woodland caribous ranges in northeastern BC (more than 33,000 km2). The analysis used the 30-year history of free and open Landsat imagery and innovative disturbance detection and spectral recovery analytics.

Results from the study demonstrate the value of the long time-series of Landsat imagery when combined with cutting edge analytical methods and processing power provided by cloud computing platforms.

The authors of the study are:

  • Olivier Tsui, Hatfield Consultants
  • Marc Steynen, SERNbc
  • Alex Bevington, BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development
  • Barry Pierce, Hatfield Consultants
  • Dr. Ignacio San-Miguel, Hatfield Consultants
